How to clean glass countertops and the kitchen counter without water marks

Smooth kitchen surfaces, such as a glass countertop, a breakfast bar or a glass hob, have one thing in common: they look spotless for a few minutes and then show every dried drop, every fingerprint and every grease splash. The good news is that you almost never need a special product. With the right order and good drying, the surface ends up clean and mark-free.

Why they mark so easily

  • Grease in the air. When you cook, tiny grease droplets settle all over the kitchen and form an invisible layer that traps dust.
  • Drops that dry on their own. When the water evaporates it leaves behind the minerals it carried, and the white mark appears.
  • Wet cloths used again and again. A cloth saturated with grease spreads it instead of removing it.
  • Too much cleaner. The excess dries as a cloudy film.

What you need

  • Warm water and mild dish soap (one drop is enough).
  • A microfibre tool that absorbs well and can be wrung out.
  • A clean, dry cloth for the finish.

Avoid hard scouring pads and abrasive powders on glass and ceramic glass: they leave fine scratches that trap more dirt later. If you have a glass hob, always clean it when the surface is cold.

Step by step

  1. Remove loose bits. Crumbs and debris come off dry; if you wet them they form a paste that gets dragged around.
  2. Degrease. With the head damp in warm water with a drop of soap, go over the surface in straight lines, not circles.
  3. Wring out and rinse. Rinse the head in clean water and wring it out well. If it still has soap on it, it leaves a film.
  4. Go over it with water only. One pass with a barely damp head removes the remaining soap.
  5. Dry straight away. Do not let the water dry by itself: wring out the head or use the dry cloth and go to the edge.
  6. Look from the side. With the window light at an angle you can see the areas you missed.

Edges, corners and the join with the wall

The edges and the join with the wall collect grease and water. Use the final passes to go along those stretches and dry the join with the tip of the cloth. If the countertop has a silicone seam, avoid leaving standing water there.

A short routine to keep it that way

  • After cooking, go over it with a damp head and dry: less than a minute.
  • Do a more thorough clean once a week.
  • Do not leave sugary or acidic spills (lemon, vinegar) on the surface for long.
  • Dry the bar after washing dishes to avoid water rings.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on granite or marble? On natural stone use only water and mild soap, and avoid acids such as vinegar or lemon.

Can I use it dry? Yes, the microfibre head removes dust and fine crumbs dry.

How often should I change the water? If it turns cloudy, change it; cleaning with dirty water moves the grease from one place to another.
