How to clean glass, mirrors and shower screens without streaks or marks

Glass, mirrors and bathroom shower screens are among the surfaces that get dirty the fastest and are the hardest to get right: a single water drop, a fingerprint or a bit of steam is enough to make them look stained again. If you have ever cleaned a window and ended up with streaks everywhere, you are not doing anything wrong. It almost always comes down to method and to the tool you use. In this guide we explain why marks appear and how to avoid them, step by step.

Why glass ends up with marks

Before cleaning, it helps to understand where the stains come from, because that makes them easier to prevent:

  • Mineral-rich water. When a drop dries on its own, it leaves behind the minerals it contained. In hard-water areas, this is what forms the white circles on shower screens.
  • Grease and fingerprints. On mirrors, windows and glass doors, the grease from your hands gets spread around by the cloth instead of being lifted away.
  • Linty or dirty cloths. A heavily used damp cloth moves dirt from one place to another and can leave fibres behind.
  • Too much product. A lot of soap or cleaner dries and leaves a cloudy film.
  • Cleaning in direct sunlight. The water evaporates before you can dry the surface, leaving streaks.

What you need

You do not need a long list of products. This is enough for most cases:

  • Warm water and, if there is grease, a drop of mild dish soap.
  • A microfibre tool that absorbs water well and can be wrung out.
  • A clean, dry cloth for the final touches.

If you use diluted white vinegar for limescale, apply it only on glass and tile, never on natural stone, and rinse afterwards.

It wrings itself out when you pull the handle, so you never touch the dirty water.

Step by step: cleaning a shower screen or a window

  1. Remove loose dirt. Rinse the surface with water to remove dust and soap residue, so you do not drag it around with the tool.
  2. Wet the head. It should be damp, not dripping. If it drips too much, wring it out before you start.
  3. Glide from top to bottom. Make long, continuous passes, without lifting and placing the tool again halfway down the glass. Each pass should slightly overlap the previous one.
  4. Wring out and repeat. When the head no longer absorbs, wring it out and keep going. A saturated head leaves water on the glass.
  5. Go over it dry. With a well-wrung head or a dry cloth, go along the edges and corners, where water collects.
  6. Check against the light. Looking at the glass from the side or against the light shows you the areas you missed.

Mirrors, windows and other smooth surfaces

The method is the same, with small adjustments depending on the surface:

  • Mirrors: work from top to bottom and take care with the edges, where water can seep into the frame.
  • Windows: choose a moment without direct sunlight and clean the frame first so dirty water does not run down the clean glass.
  • Kitchen counter and breakfast bar: remove crumbs and heavy grease first, then dry with one clean pass.
  • Car interior: on windscreens and windows use very little water and finish dry so no halos are left.

Compact and light: it fits in a drawer or in the car.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using too much cleaner "just in case".
  • Wiping in circles, which spreads the dirt instead of removing it.
  • Letting the water dry on its own on the glass.
  • Reusing a dirty or linty cloth.
  • Cleaning when the glass is hot from the sun.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special glass cleaner? Not necessarily. Warm water and, if there is grease, a drop of mild dish soap are usually enough. What matters is not overdoing the product and drying well.

Can it be used dry? Yes, the microfibre head works wet or dry, for example to dust smooth surfaces.

How often should I clean the shower screen? If you dry it after every shower, marks build up much less and the deep clean becomes quicker.
