How to remove pet hair from the sofa, the bed and your clothes
Share
If you live with a dog or a cat, you know how it goes: hair shows up on the sofa, on the bed, on dark clothes and even on the car seat, no matter how much you clean. That is normal. Many pets shed all year round, and even more in certain seasons. The good news is that with a simple method you can keep it under control without spending more than you need to. Here we explain how to remove pet hair from fabric, clothes and surfaces, and how to do it without relying on disposable sheets.
Why hair sticks to fabric
Pet hair is fine and light, and it catches on the fibres of textiles. It sticks even more because of static electricity, especially on synthetic fabrics, and it gets into the seams and creases of cushions. That is why simply brushing it with your hand or shaking out a garment usually moves the hair around but does not remove it.
Where it builds up the most
- Sofas and armchairs, especially in the spots where your pet lies down.
- Beds and blankets, where hair gets buried in the folds.
- Clothes, especially dark or soft-fabric garments.
- Rugs and carpets, where it mixes with dust.
- Car seats, if your pet travels with you.

Step-by-step method to remove the hair
- Start with the bulk. If there is a lot of loose hair, shake it off or vacuum before using the roller.
- Work in one direction. Roll over the fabric with gentle pressure and in long passes, instead of going back and forth without order.
- Cover the whole surface. Go over it section by section and slightly overlap each pass.
- Take care of the corners. On seams and corners, use the edge of the roller and press a little harder.
- Rinse when it fills up. Once the surface is loaded with hair, it no longer picks up well. Rinse it under the tap and keep going.
- Let it dry. Before using it again, let it air dry.
How to keep hair down at home, consistently
- Brush your pet regularly. It is the most effective measure: less hair on the brush means less hair on the furniture.
- Cover their favourite spots with a blanket or cover you can wash often.
- Clean little and often. Five minutes a day takes less effort than a big clean every week.
- Keep a tool within reach: in the living room, the bedroom or the car. If it is close, you use it.
Disposable or washable rollers: which is better?
Adhesive-sheet rollers work, but each sheet runs out and you have to buy refills. A washable roller changes that logic: instead of throwing the sheet away, you rinse the surface and it grips again. For anyone cleaning pet hair several times a week, the difference shows in both the cost and the waste generated.
